Ten Years Later

“Don’t you think we went a little overboard?” I asked Bryan.

He chuckled and sipped his drink. “Nope.”

I rolled my eyes. Of course he would say no but secretly I agreed with him. Looking around, I took in the large group of smiling faces. The ballroom was decked out in a pink, silver, and black. The deejay was spinning the latest records, the caterer kept the food restocked, and everyone was having a good time. All in all it was a wonderful sweet sixteen birthday party.

Glancing across the room, I smiled and waved at our twin girls, Brittany and Brianna. Bryan and I had fallen in love with them the moment we met them. Their sweet dispositions and horrific story had made us want to take them home with us immediately. I could definitely identify with the pain they had endured. All of that pain had been replaced with love and happiness the moment the adoption papers were signed.

The girls were both beautiful. If one didn’t know any better they would have sworn they had come from my womb they looked so much like me. It was only in appearance that they were similar.

Brittany was very reserved. She didn’t attend many parties and didn’t have many friends, though the ones she did have were her best friends. She’d rather spend her time with a good book or listening to music.

Brianna was my wild child. I had to keep a stern eye on her. She had too many friends if the size of this party was any indication. She loved people and loved to be surrounded by them. She wanted to go out every weekend and had fought with me in vain about her early curfew.

Both girls were the apples of Bryan’s eye. He spoiled those girls to the core. Never once did they have to ask for anything. He wanted to make sure that they were always happy. From the moment they came home with us, it was all about his three girls. He was a great father and always complemented me on being a great mother.

After the conversation we had about my past, he drove to Minnesota and gathered all my belongings out of storage. He had put up all the pictures of my family. Pictures of my parents and I, my engagement photo with Markai, and the pictures of me pregnant with Markai Jr. and Adelaide, adorned the walls in our home.

He didn’t want me to forget them. He wanted me to cherish their memories. It was as if a brick house had been lifted off my shoulders when he said that and I had an epiphany. Maybe my life had taken a turn for the shit hole because I tried to run from something that was so engrained in me, their love.

Looking at my husband and my daughters, I was glad I had finally stopped running. No matter where I went those problems would have been their waiting for me. I was thankful that Bryan had pushed me to slow down and actually feel.
